What is minoxidil?

How long does it take for minoxidil to work?
Most patients begin noticing reduced shedding or early regrowth within 3-6 months of consistent daily use. Full visible results typically continue to improve over 6-12 months, depending on individual response.
Can minoxidil cause shedding?
Some users experience a temporary increase in shedding when starting treatment. This occurs as weaker hairs are pushed out to make room for new, stronger growth and usually resolves with continued use.
When does minoxidil shedding start?
If shedding occurs, it most often begins within the first 2-8 weeks after starting treatment. Not everyone experiences shedding, and when it does occur, it is usually temporary.
Does minoxidil cause hair loss?
No. Minoxidil does not cause permanent hair loss. Temporary shedding is part of the hair cycle reset and is a sign that follicles are responding to treatment.

FDA-Approved Uses
Topical Minoxidil Minoxidil 2% and 5% topical solutions and foams are FDA-approved for the treatment of hair loss in men and women. Higher-strength or compounded topical formulations are prescribed off-label following an online medical evaluation.
Topical Tretinoin Tretinoin is FDA-approved for the treatment of acne and photoaging. When used in hair-loss formulations, tretinoin is prescribed off-label to enhance follicular penetration and activity.
What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Using This Treatment?

Skin & Scalp History
- Sensitive skin or history of dermatitis
- Eczema, psoriasis, or chronic scalp irritation
- Open wounds or inflamed scalp
Cardiovascular History (Minoxidil-Related)
- High or low blood pressure
- Heart disease
- History of fainting or dizziness
- Irregular heartbeat
Pregnancy & Reproductive Status
- Pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (Tretinoin should not be used during pregnancy)
Medication Use
- Use of other retinoids
- Use of topical steroids
- Use of blood-pressure medications
Who Should Not Use This Treatment?
You should not use topical minoxidil with tretinoin if you:
- Have had an allergic reaction to minoxidil or tretinoin
- Are pregnant or may become pregnant
- Have severe or uncontrolled cardiovascular disease
- Have active scalp infections or open skin lesions
- Have known hypersensitivity to retinoids
Pregnancy Warning (Tretinoin)
Tretinoin may cause fetal harm. This product should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.
